Why I Wrote Achary’s Letter Day
I have always been interested in the “why” behind the names parents choose for their children. Often, it is something we agonize over, trying out every option being considered. Sometimes we build little pyramids of sticky notes on a mirror, with the day’s favorite sitting at the top.
That image grew into a question: What if our children had a choice in their name?
What began as a bedtime story we shared with our son every night eventually became a story worth sharing.
He is grown now, but I still remember the time spent considering his name and the visions I had for what it might mean for him. Over time, I realized the definitions I had placed on his name were reshaped by his story and his life.
He fit it better than we ever could have imagined.
“Mommy, can we read the letter book tonight?”
A friend shared this is what her son asked her the other night before bed.
A bedtime story was the seed which took root and grew to become Achary’s Letter Day.
Our nighttime routine was teaching my little dragon the alphabet by “trying on” all the letters until we got to the end. We would laugh at the funny ones and make faces at the strange sounding ones.
The path to publishing this wasn’t an easy one. Putting it on paper was one thing, but bringing the images to life was the challenge, especially with my first book.
Ultimately, I am very excited to share this with you. It is a way for me to share our bedtime story with you and your child.
My hope is your child will ask, “Mommy, can we read the letter book tonight” too.
