Why I Wrote The Base Path

Understanding the different levels of baseball, knowing when private lessons make sense, and learning how to get the most from them weren't things we found in a handbook. We learned them through experience, one season at a time.

The Base Path was written to help parents and players better understand the game beyond the white lines so they can make the most of the magical moments between them.

Batting Practice

As much as playing baseball is a rite of passage, taking your player to the cages for some BP is right up there with it.

Ask your player, “You wanna hit?”

It’s about the same as asking your dog if it wants to go for a walk.

I’ve never gotten a no to either.

Spend a little time at the cages and you’ll see two types of sessions.

One has a plan.

The other has a machine cranked up to 60 mph from 30 feet…with a 7-year-old trying to survive it.

No warm-up.
No structure.
Just swings.

And a lot of frustration.

A coach I respect says it best:

“Practice doesn’t make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.”

Repetition matters.

But only when it’s the right repetition.

Otherwise, all you’re doing is reinforcing bad habits.

And those habits?

They last longer than three up and three down.
